Blogging New Year’s resolutions

January 1st, 2007 · No Comments

1. Post more often

I averaged about 1 1/2 posts per week this year, and think I can do better. I started this blog with skepticism, but found that I loved writing for it more than I thought I would. When I write more often, I’m thinking more, I’m learning more, and I’m more energized about everything I’m doing. If anything, it’s a nice break from coding, and a way to exercise another part of my brain.

2. Write more technical entries

Some of you are going to hate this, but I’m planning to create more posts with technology “recipes” and bits of code from my projects that I think others might benefit from. I frequently run into challenging technical problems or obscure bugs, and there’s no reason why I should keep the solutions to myself. I haven’t published a single line of source code here yet, despite the fact that I’ve churned out a lot of it this year. There’s a great community out there of developers who I’ve benefited from by reading through their code, and I want to give something back.

3. Write more about my business

I had intended to provide regular updates about the progress of the business, but fell short. Without getting into too much detail on the financials, I want to write more about what’s working and what isn’t, including statistics and graphs where appropriate. I see the transparency as a good thing for helping me think deeper about my business strategies and solicit feedback from readers.

4. Damper my growing YouTube addiction

Ever since I discovered a nice WordPress plugin for embedding video without disabling the rich text editor, I’ve been posting a lot of videos here. OK, this is probably the resolution I’m least likely to keep, but acceptance is the first step to recovery. I once watched a full-length movie on YouTube — how sad is that?

Is there anything else you’d like to see or not see here in 2007?
